Old Joliet State Prison, built in 1858 in Joliet, Illinois, is a massive limestone fortress known for its harsh conditions and haunting atmosphere. Among its most infamous areas was the North Segregation Building, used to isolate violent or unruly inmates in near-total confinement. Conditions there were notorious, amplifying the prison’s already grim reputation. Closed in 2002, the site now stands as a historic landmark, famous for its ghostly legends, long history, intimidating architecture, and appearances in films like The Blues Brothers.
